Michael Jackson Still Topping the Top Music Charts

July 2nd, 2010

By Gellian Sommers

Moonwalk, very lively concert, crystal voice and a big heart; these are the attributes of an artist who has affected the whole world because of his passing away, Michael Jackson. His dance moves are superb and incredibly his own. His songs are all beautifully created and are consistent top music charts frontrunner. The king of pop, the ultimate entertainer had never failed each of his audience, listeners and fans to know him more.

As the world commemorate the first year anniversary of his death, let us celebrate his life. Born on August 29, 1958, the seventh child of the Jackson family started entertaining the people alongside with his brothers as a member of The Jackson 5 producing “I Want You Back”, “ABC”, “The Love You Save”, and “I’ll Be There”, in the 1960s. He debuted as a professional solo artist at a tender age of 13 creating hit-making songs such as “Got to be there” and the more popular “Ben”.

Since then, he became a dominant figure in the popular music scene. in 1982, he released his album “Thriller”, which became the best-selling album of all time, not only in the United States but also in the whole world. “Billie Jean”, “Beat It,” and “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin” are among the top singles from the album that dominated every top music charts. He has also created music videos and movies and had co-written the charity single “We are the world” to aid the poor in the U.S. and Africa.

In 1988, MJ release his first and only autobiography album, “Moonwalk”, which took four years to complete. He wrote about his childhood, the abused he has suffered and physical changes that are happening to him. “Moonwalk” is then followed by another album “Dangerous”, released in 1991, with hit singles such as “Black or White”, “Remember the time” and the biggest hit from the album “Heal the World”.

The years that follow has never been easy for the “Artist of the Decade”. He faced several allegations, disputes and marriage related problems. But that didn’t stop him from returning, as a matter of fact, in 2009 he announced a series of comeback concerts entitled “This is it”. But the “final curtain call” was never turned into reality. On June 25, 2009, he was found unconscious in be at his rented mansion in Los Angeles. Though attempts to revive the pop icon, he pronounced dead an hour after he was brought to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Jackson’s death has triggered a global outpouring of grief.

Jackson’s memorial was held on July 7, 2009, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, preceded by a private family service at Forest Lawn Memorial Park’s Hall of Liberty. He was then entombed on September 3, 2009, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.

It’s been a year since his sudden lost. Fans around the globe commemorate and celebrate the great contributions and influence he has shared to the world. For some, it is a reality that he is gone but for fans, who are continuously devoting their time listening to his songs that has peaked almost every top music charts, he will be alive forever in their midst.

How to Beat the Poker Gods

July 1st, 2010

By Daniel Deakins

Poker is the game of cowboys and high jacks. As Kenny Rogers once said, ‘You have to know when to hold’em and know when to fold’em’. Poker can be game that brings much joy, but can be a game that brings frustration and despair. The reason for this is the highs and lows that follow poker, any professional will tell that they themselves have hit a bad time or bad run, as the jargon dictates. So anyone coming into the game or ‘fish’ as you will be known is facing an uphill struggle.

Their struggle can be defined by many factors. Poker strategies come into three main categories, first mathematics, second people management and third reading people. The first mathematics is obviously utilized to calculate odds and careful management of your money or ‘stack’. The second is about watching the bets others make and building up a common pattern for each individual player. The third is only relevant in face to face games, but still reading some one’s mind based on their facial ticks and hand movements is a difficult skill to master. All three of these skills combined will make you a poker master, some of the poker greats have only mastered one or two of these skills.

If you choose to go down the online route of poker then you need to eliminate the need to understand one of the skills, leaving only two to get to grips with. I can tell you from personal experience that this by no means makes things easier for you. In online poker you are relying purely on instinct to drive your play, but that instinct won’t come straight away, you will have nurture it over time. The way you nurture instinct is by playing and going through all the highs and lows. The only way to describe the difference between face to face poker and online poker is by saying it’s like trying to find the light switch in the dark. This shouldn’t put you off though, far from it. The rewards from masterful play online can bring you riches for only a couple of hours of play a day, especially with all the incentives available to join an online poker site, no deposit bonus, matched deposit bonuses.

There is however a new evil spreading and becoming more and more common in online poker rooms, the poker bot. The poker is considered illegal in most poker rooms. The bot itself is nothing more than odds calculators, which aren’t illegal, but where bots differ is that they take control, all you do is press the button and leave it. This is the only glitch that might show up in your attempt at poker dominance. They are considered by many to be unbeatable, you can of course beat a bot as the decisions of a bot are based in the rules of a program, but you will experience much frustration and monetary heartache in the process. Your best bet if you think you have found a bot is to back out of the game. You need to look out for betting that is too perfect, especially in no limit rooms.

Online poker player and sometimes bad loser!

It Does Matter What You Drink Your Wine Out Of

June 30th, 2010

By John Espinosa

Avid wine drinkers know that you cannot just poor a fine wine into any old glass. Surface area of the wine out of the bottle, the temperature of your hand and even the shape of glass are all factors that affect how a wine will taste and feel in the drinker’s mouth. This article will give the reader a brief overview of why it is important to have a proper champagne flute to drink fine champagne from as opposed to other wine glasses or glass wear.

What is a champagne flute?

A flute is a type of stemware used for drinking wine or other sparkling drinks. The stem is the long thin piece of glass that separates the base of the glass from the bowl that holds the liquid. The shape of this glass resembles a typical wine glass or it may have a trumpet shape or is otherwise very narrow. The stem on the glass has a very specific purpose of allowing the drinker to hold the glass without touching the bowl. This is done to avoid heating the wine up with the warmth of hand. The design of the bowl also has a very specific job. When wine is poured into a glass, it begins to lose carbonation. The more surface area that is exposed, the faster the wine loses its carbonation and the flatter tasting it becomes. This is the reason that a flute bowl is so narrow, to maintain carbonation. Champagne flutes accomplish this much better than a champagne coupe or saucer, which exposes the wine to a much greater amount of surface area.

A champagne flute also helps facilitate the natural phenomenon of nucleation. This process in a flute helps form the bubbles that you see. Too much of it will cause carbonation to go away quickly. A flute provides a smoother surface area inside the glass so that there can be increased bubble texture in the drinker’s mouth.

Flutes come in a variety of styles and designs however, they all follow the same thin and narrow overall construction for the purposes described above. Some come etched or printed with ornate designs and can be purchased as single, double or in multiple glass sets. A single flute can retail anywhere from a few dollars for a plastic version to around 100 dollars for a crystal version. Prices can go up from there if purchasing a glass with gold or silver plating around the rim or other ornate features.

Therefore, the next time someone tells you that wine in any glass will taste the same; you can tell them how wrong they are. Champagne flutes help necessitate the environment in which wine tastes and feels the best. Other glasses are suitable however, they can detract from a fine wine by simply the way they are constructed. More economical champagne coinsures can find plastic champagne flutes for their needs or if you are a big spender there are a variety of crystal champagne flutes that can have ornate designs or gold and silver plated accents to impress your dinner crowd.

The author has spent a lot of time learning about champagne flutes and other related topics. Read more about wedding flutes at John Espinosa’s website.

Will the New York Yankees Repeat?

June 29th, 2010

By Freddie Brister

It is the halfway point in another great season, and the burning question is can the New York Yankees repeat as World Series Champions? This can be answered with a simple no. while the team is a good example of what all to do to win; there are a few points that will give the team trouble later in the season. While these issues are not a problem now, there will be a point that the wheels fall off the bus and the team will crash.

The Yankees bullpen is beginning to show signs of weakness. This is a shame because this was a massive point that allowed the team to dominate their opponents. The simple trouble is that the team is wearing out the talent that they have in the pitching rotation and as a result is leading to the team not being able to get back on track. C.C Sabathia is just not able to do it as well as he once did, this is a leading cause for worry in the pitching department.

There is the pitcher that they acquired that can pitch left or right handed, this will not be any help, as this is a rookie, and he is not ready to make that much of an impact on the team just yet. In later years, there may be a time when he can save the team, for the moment now, there is little that he can do.

With a bull pen that is showing signs of wear and tear, it is a wonder that they are still standing let alone still in the hunt for the division title. The team has made a lot of adjustments that have given them a little room to improve the situation. There is a desperate effort back behind the scenes to fix the pitching problem as the team has held things together so far, but this will not last for long.

The power of the bats is the main reason that the team stills has some life left in it in order to compete this season, the more that the team struggles with the pitching, then the more that they will need to rely on the batting order to keep things moving forward.

One look at the outfield and you can also see that this area is working to the max in order to make up for the lack of quality pitching. There has been an added sense of hustle for the players in the outfield. They are working harder as a result.

There needs to be a fix put in place soon for the Yankees. If not the team will begin a downward spiral and as a result will see their title hopes disappear. The success or failure of the team will all depend on what they do in the bullpen and how quickly do they do it.

The Yankees are a great team that at the moment has a weakness that needs to be addressed. This can be fixed and as a result save the teams hopes for a repeat World Series win. If these problems are not fixed then they along with their fans will be watching from home.

How to Be Environmentally Friendly Quickly and Easily

June 28th, 2010

By Geoffrey Moore

Some people may not realize it, but looking after the environment is an important goal that everyone must tackle. The environment helps the world and those living inside it in so many ways, and if care is not taken there could be severe consequences. But how can this be handled? What can a person do to help the environment? The answers are many.

  1. The next time you have a place that you need to get to, consider hanging up your car keys. Should the distance to your destination not be that long, you should consider utilizing a bike. A bike will not give off any emissions that could harm the atmosphere, and it is a fun activity to boot. You can take in the sights and sounds of nature, and not necessarily the chaos of the road. It is also healthy exercise, something that any medical practitioner would recommend.
  2. Instead of constantly using paper and plastic bags provided by the grocery store, bring your own. These days, many stores are selling special, recyclable canvas bags that allow people to use them over and over when they shop. If your concern is over fashion and style, there is no need to worry. Reusable canvas bags come in many different colors and designs; there is sure to be something that would fit perfectly to your taste. Remember, they need not only be used in one place. You can use them anywhere you please, from the shopping mall to the local video game store.
  3. Finally, during the colder months of the year, consider using as little of your heater as possible. This may seem like a crazy idea, but doing this will keep down the level of energy and electricity that your home consumes. There are many ways in which you could still keep warm. You could wear warm layers of clothing; frequently drink hot cocoa, and so on. You could even have a fire pit installed to keep you warm at any time of the day. Fire pits make excellent substitutes for heaters, and it is an activity the whole family can enjoy. Sit around and talk and you may just learn new things.

How to Travel as a Vegan, Female, or Solo Traveler

June 25th, 2010

By Maria Giurcan

For those who do wish to embark on a solo journey, there are some helpful tips you can follow to make your trip a more pleasant one. A few of these guidelines are of greater value to vegan travelers or solo female travelers.

  1. Take a copy of the books “Vegan Passport” or “PointIt” with you so that you can communicate your vegan dining needs in countries where you do not speak the language and the restaurant wait staff do not speak English.
  2. Take a foreign language class at an adult education center prior to your trip. Some places offer classes primarily for travel. You should memorize basic travel lingo such as “I do not eat chicken or fish”, “Where is the bathroom?” or “Is it safe to walk alone here at night?”. Also, learning the language can sometimes help you with bargaining for better deals at bazaars or markets. The locals appreciate the effort you took to learn their language.
  3. Dress appropriately for the destination country. In Greece or Arab countries, women should dress modestly in religious venues such as temples. You may be treated with more respect and get better prices at the markets for example if you where a head scarf in Egypt.
  4. Speak to the locals, hotel/hostel staff, bus drivers, taxi drivers to determine which areas or streets are dangerous for a solo traveler to walk after dark.
  5. Realize that in some countries, the concept of “vegan” is misunderstood. Be sure to mention that you do not eat chicken, fish, or animal broth and that no bones should be in the soups either.
  6. You may be interested in signing up with a local tour company for a city tour of your destination. This would be safer as you can travel to a more remote location with others.
  7. Wear a waist pouch under your clothing to hide money.
  8. And the obvious.. Do not wear expensive jewelry or anything that looks expensive!
  9. Do your vegan restaurant research online in advance before your trip. This will prove advantageous for two reasons. Vegans will be able to dine on suitable meal options. There will be no need to wander about town seeking out vegan dining establishments and not knowing how safe a particular neighborhood is.
  10. If no vegan-friendly restaurants exist in your destination city, the best alternative is to determine if there are any ethnic restaurants close by. Vegans should find out if their destination vicinity has any Indian, Thai, or Mid-Eastern restaurants. Those cuisines offer several vegan meal options.

Following these tips will ensure that your travels are happy and safer!

I am a vegan and avid world traveler who has visited 5 continents. I would love to share my travel advice for traveling vegetarians and vegans.

How to Play Hold’em Poker: Tips to Play and Win

June 24th, 2010

By Carolyn Anderson

Many people love to learn the Texas hold’em poker as this can be an exciting great game that can also be an avenue to make big profits as well. If you happen to watch the Texas hold’em poker tournaments online and on TV, you will indeed find the game a great one to learn.

Read on if you want to learn how to play hold’em poker and learn to enjoy the game and make good winnings as well.

Texas hold’em poker is fun and it would be a lot fun especially if you win. Of course, the excitement comes with winning, and if you want to win in Texas hold’em poker, here are some tips that might help you outsmart everyone on the table.

Know the game. Of course, it is important to be knowledgeable about the game to win it. Know the terms and the mechanics of Texas hold’em. Watching the game often can also help you learn a few tips and strategies that players do while on the table.

Play to win. Of course, the fun in poker is not just in winning, but if you can win, that would be more fun and exciting. Of course, looking at your money that doubled or tripled and even more, after the game, would be a very great deal as well.

Choose your place on the table. This may seem simple but this can be a crucial part of how to play hold’em poker and win. One of the important tips to keep in mind before even the game starts is to take note of your position to the dealer. The early position means you have to act first than your opponents and you may not have the advantage of reading your opponent’s cards if you need to decide to raise, call or fold first.

Keep in mind though that it does not always mean you will play in the early position all throughout the game. Depending on where the blind is, you can be in the early position, middle or the late position in reference to the blinds. If you are playing on the early position, you may want to play bigger cards and fold on the smaller ones. If you are in the late position, you can also call with small pairs as well, and with a good advantage of being able to read your opponent’s cards.

Don’t play too many hands. One thing that can fail you in Texas hold’em poker is to play too many hands in the hope of winning. Keep in mind that you don’t have to play a lot of hands to win big in poker. If you want to learn how to play hold’em poker, also learn to control yourself and train yourself to only play the hands that can give you good chances of winning.

The bluff. Probably one of the best things that you can do in poker is the bluffing, but this can also be disastrous. Master the art of bluffing and practice your poker face. If you have a very readable expression, that can be a strength of your opponents, so make sure you know how.

Try Some South African Wine While Watching World Cup

June 23rd, 2010

By Bill Garlough

The world’s attention is shifting to South Africa, the host country for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Soccer Championship. Soccer is widely regarded as the most popular international sport, so the games played from June 11 – July 11 will be watched by scores of fervent football (called soccer in the US) fanatics throughout the world.

As South African wines are also gaining prominence in the wine world, now is a good time to try one of these wines and tip our caps to the World Cup soccer games. Whether it’s a refreshing white wine for sipping or a rich red that pairs nicely with a grilled steak, South Africa can score the winning goal for your taste buds.

South Africa:
South Africa is the most prominent wine region on the African Continent, both in terms of production and quality. Little was known about this country’s wine industry prior to 1990, because of apartheid and a closely guarded government. The release from jail of Nelson Mandela in 1990 and his subsequent election as the country’s first Black President in 1994 signaled the end of apartheid and allowed the global community to embrace the new South Africa. This generated a dramatic rise in wine exports. However, South Africa needed to improve the quality of its wines by developing its Terroir, to successfully compete on the global stage. Terroir is a wine’s sense of place and time. The place refers the winery’s soil, geography, climate and the winemaking traditions. Time refers to a specific growing season (was it a hot or wet summer?) and the yields of that year’s crop (this can be controlled by removing some fruit from the vines during the growing season). The winery decides if they want quantity (more wine) or quality (lower yields for a more concentrated, flavorful wine).

While South Africa traditionally produces large crops, there is a movement to open new wineries that focus on lower yields and higher quality wines. The three major regions of the South African wine industry are located near Cape Town, and are known as the Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and Western Cape. Of these, the Western Cape is home to the two most important wine areas, Paarl and Stellenbosch.

South African Wines:
Early on, South Africa was most famous for its Port wines and Sherries. Wine connoisseurs have long regarded South African Sherry as the equal to fine Spanish Sherry and its Ruby and Tawny Ports are also held in high regard. While growing in popularity, Sherry and Port represent a small segment of general wine consumption. White and red table wine makeup the majority of wine sales today.

White wines have historically dominated South Africa’s table wine production. The leading varietal, Chenin Blanc (locally called Steen), has its roots in the Loire Valley of France and may have been introduced by the French Huguenots or the Dutch East India Company in the late 1600′s. In keeping with its emphasis, Chenin Blanc leads South Africa’s wine exports. Also, Chenin Blanc’s natural acidity and versatility makes this varietal a good blending partner with other whites like Colombard. Paarl and Worcester are the leading wine regions for Chenin Blanc production. With South Africa’s warm climate, these wines tend to offer more tropical fruit flavors than the Chenin Blancs produced in the Loire Valley of France (a lean style with mineral flavors).

On the red side, South Africa produces a varietal that is unique in the wine world – Pinotage (a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut grapes). Among some of my wine friends, this is not a favorite. However, it is popular in South Africa for outdoor barbeques, as it offers a rustic and smoky flavor that pairs well with BBQ meats, and is worth a try. Today, South Africa is producing better quality Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz that successfully compete in the global market. Of these, South Africa is best known for its Cabs. Cabernet Sauvignon is the most widely planted red varietal in South Africa and is produced in both a blended (with Shiraz or Bordeaux varietals) and straight (100% Cab grapes) style. The Stellenbosch region is known for its Cabs and produces a medium-bodied style with soft tannins, ripe fruit (red cherry and coffee flavors) and smoky notes.

To combat South Africa’s warm/hot and dry climate, the newer, quality-minded wineries seek vineyard plantings on valley hillsides that offer good soil (includes some clay to help hold water) with cooling fog and sea breezes. Better vineyard sites, lower yields per acre and improved fermentation processes are creating exciting wines. Give them a try and cheer on your favorite team during the World Cup.

Bill’s Wine Picks

  • 2008 Graham Beck Chenin Blanc (87 pts. Wine Spectator)
  • 2007 Warwick Pinotage (88 pts. Wine Spectator)
  • 2007 Excelsior Cabernet (popular selling, not rated)
  • 2007 Graham Beck Cabernet (full bodied, 87 pts. R. Parker)
  • 2008 Waterford Estate Cabernet (89 pts. Wine Spectator)

Ken Forrester Petit Chenin Blanc

  • Ken Forrester is known for producing quality South African wines.
  • The Chenin Blanc Stellenbosch Petit 2008 rated 87 pts. by the Wine Spectator and received a Best Values designation.
  • The Wine Spectator describes this white as “showing delightful floral, heather, candied lime peel and quince notes on a bright, unadorned frame.”
  • 100,000 cases were produced, so it should be readily available. Cheers!

Golf Swing Tips for Newbies

June 22nd, 2010

By Amuro Wesley

There are many golf instructors claiming their golf swing tips to be the best. You can read their ads in papers, magazines and online classified sites. But whether they are really as good as they claimed to be is what you will only find out when you signed up for their courses and undergoing the training in the golf course.

So before you start investing in any course, here are some factors you need to take into consideration.

Knowing What Works and What Does Not

This is the most important factor to consider especially for newbies.

Although the best way to excel in golf is through daily and continuous training, you need to find what works and what does not. There are many systems out there and each golf instructor has his or her own teaching method. Just because his or her teaching method works for some beginners does not mean it will work for you.

Irregardless of what we learn be it golf or other things, we all have different learning speed and capability. So it is impossible to impose one technique and enforce everyone to do the same. While some may benefit, others may not.

The best instructor is one who knows what works and what does not work for you and implement a system based on your level of understanding. Although there are many instructors out there, such instructors are quite rare. But if you manage to find one, learn and apply everything you are taught instead of taking it for granted.

Differentiating a Good Advice from Bad

From time to time, we all received advice. Not just from instructors but from our fellow trainees and even loved ones around us.

The best advice is still from instructor. If the instructor has been experienced in golf, you can easily tell when he talks and the way he demonstrate how to execute a proper golf swing.

Initially it may not go down well with you or any beginner. Especially when the instructor points out your mistakes and shows you the correct way. We can either let our pride get in the way or we may take a longer time to adopt to the right way.

For instance if you are right-handed and your instructor thinks you will be better with your left hand, will you accept his or her advice despite knowing that it will take you some time to adjust or will you let your pride prevent you from doing so since you do not want to step out of your right-handed comfort zone?

If the advice is good and with the intention of grooming you to be better, it is best to follow.

Setting Tangible Goals

As with anything else, you need to set tangible goals if you want to succeed in your golf swings.

Goals such as setting your minimum striking distance, shot accuracy rate and speed are essential. If you do not understand what this means, you can clarify these with your instructor who will be happy to elaborate more.

Apart from your objectives, you need to be familiar with your goal equipment. So even before buying or getting the set, make sure you select tools such as golf club, shoes and clothing based on your height, weight and comfort level.

Occasionally, you will be required to practice in a crowded golf course. With many people around, you tend to get distracted and pressured easily from fulfilling your full potential.

So setting tangible goals from time to time is very important.

Being Fully Focused on the Game

Distractions are not always unavoidable. Especially in tournaments when everyone be it audience or media are watching you. They will give comments based on your past performances whether good or not or your personality if you are new.

The only person you should listen to under such circumstances is your instructor and no one else. Because only your instructor knows you best and how to bring the best out of you. So listen to him or her without letting anyone or anything else to cloud your mind.

Best of all, know what you are in the game to win so do what is required to enable to you to win.
